Over the last six months, Le Figaro has brought live video into its 500-strong journalist newsroom under the direction of Bertrand Gié, head of new media at the publisher. Started in 1826, it’s one of France’s oldest media companies, and now has seven different studios where it creates five different show formats each day, creating up to six hours of original video. Gié’s mantra: “Live is the most important. I want us to be as hot as possible; if you’re not live, you’re not hot.” Video is heavily weighted to political debates and news briefs, plus a more monetizable half-hour covering sports, travel, health and wine. Le Figaro recently built an on-site player with chat functionality for more audience interaction. “We don’t want to be TV,“ Gié says. “We need to think different.”
